Poker is a card game that has become one of the most popular games around the world. It is a game of strategy and luck and can be enjoyed by players of all skill levels. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, learning the basics of poker can improve your game.

When playing poker you will need a deck of cards and some chips to represent your bets. Each player buys in for a certain amount of money and then places those chips into the pot to make bets and raises. These chips are called “poker chips.” There are several different colors and values of poker chips, but most games are played with white chips (or a light colored chip) worth 1 unit and red chips (2 or 5 units) valued at 10 whites.

After everyone has received their 2 hole cards there is a round of betting that starts with the player to the left of the dealer. This is referred to as the button position and will pass around the table after every hand. After the first round of betting the dealer deals 3 community cards face up on the board that anyone can use. This is known as the flop.

After the flop you will need to decide whether to play your strong hands or just call with weaker ones. A good rule to remember is that a flop with many straight or flush cards will usually mean that your opponent has a decent showdown hand and that you should fold.
