VEGAN parents who forced their sick baby to eat nothing but vegan food have lost custody of their child after doctors found it to be severely malnourished.
The child, who was later admitted to a hospital in Milan, Italy, had to undergo an emergency surgery for a congenital heart condition.
He also suffered insufficient calcium levels and was severely malnourished.
Doctors have stated that the heart condition was exacerbated by the vegan diet.
Director of paediatrics Luca Bernardo said: ‘This forces us to reflect on uncommon feeding regimes, even if in this case it was complicated by a cardiac malformation.
“It is not a problem to choose different or unusual kinds of nutrition and we certainly do not want to enter into a discussion of the merits of the decision.
“But since birth, the baby should have had support in this case with calcium and iron.”
Police were informed about the case and an enquiry was opened to take the baby away from his parents.
The child’s grandparents are likely to have custody of the boy.
